Planting Guide
Swiss Chard Instructions
Hardiness & Climate
Prefers cool and mild weather, though chard has some heat tolerance. Seedlings tolerate light frosts, and mature plants tolerate moderate frosts. Swiss chard may even overwinter in mild areas. Note: Prolonged exposure to temperatures in the low 50s (°F) or below may trigger bolting.
Sowing Method
Direct Seed (Bunching): Sow ~6 seeds/ft., 1/2" deep, in rows 12–18" apart from mid-spring into mid-summer. Thin to 4–6" apart.
Direct Seed (Baby Leaf): Sow 2–4 seeds/inch, 1/4–1/2" deep in rows at least 2" apart. Avoid overcrowding to prevent stunted growth.
Transplanting: Start indoors 5–6 weeks before last heavy frost. Sow 2–3 seeds/cell 1/2" deep. Transplant out 4–6" apart.
Temperatures
Germination Range: 40–100°F (5–38°C).
Optimum Germination: Peaks steadily at 86°F (30°C).
Decorticated & Pelleted Seed Info
These seeds are decorticated (rubbed), meaning the natural angular, corky edges have been removed to flow smoothly through seeders. If you are using our pelleted seed option, consistent soil moisture is crucial to dissolve the clay pellet during germination.
Pests & Diseases
Maintain proper spacing for airflow and rotate crops annually to prevent Cercospora leaf spot and other common pests.
Harvest & Regrowth
Bunching: Cut or snap mature outer leaves individually. The inner leaves will continue to grow for multiple harvests.
Baby Leaf: Harvest when leaves are 3–6" long. Cut about an inch above the soil (above the basal plate) to allow for clean regrowth in 5–14 days.
