Planting Guide
Zinnia Elegans Instructions
Hardiness Zones, Soil & Light
Grows beautifully across the US in USDA Zones 2–11 as a warm-season annual. Plant in full sun. Zinnias require fertile soil rich in organic matter. An optimal soil pH is 6.3-6.8. They are very sensitive to frost, so wait until weather has fully warmed.
Sowing Method
Transplant (Recommended): Sow into 72-cell flats 4 weeks before planting out. Cover seeds entirely. Succession-sow every 2 weeks for prolonged yields of high-quality stems.
Direct Seed: Sow 1/4" deep after all danger of frost has passed.
Temperatures & Germination
Seeds germinate rapidly in 3-5 days at optimal soil temperatures of 80-85°F (27-29°C). A heat mat will help maintain an accurate temperature. Lower temperatures (70-75°F) will result in slower germination.
Plant Spacing & Succession
Space plants 12-24" apart, depending on the variety (typically 9-12" for cutting varieties). For continuous blooms all season long, succession sow every 2-3 weeks until midsummer.
Harvesting & The "Wiggle Test"
Harvest for fresh bouquets when the true flowers (the tiny florets in the very center of the bloom) just begin to open. Pro Tip: Use the "wiggle test"—gently shake the stem about 8 inches below the flower. If the head wobbles or bends, it is not ready. If the stem is stiff and rigid just below the bloom, it is perfectly ready to cut.
