Planting Guide
Tomato Instructions
Transplanting (Required)
Don't start too early! Leggy or root-bound transplants will stunt production. Sow indoors 1/4" deep about 5–6 weeks before your final frost date. At the first true leaf stage, pot-up to 4" pots. Plant outdoors only when danger of consecutive nights below 45°F (7°C) has passed.
Temperatures
Optimum Germination: Peaks steadily near 86°F (30°C). Maintain soil mix at 75–85°F until emergence (usually 5-7 days).
Growing: Lower to a constant 60–70°F (16–21°C) to grow stout, healthy seedlings before hardening off.
Spacing & Planting Depth
Important: Plant seedlings deeply to encourage adventitious rooting (roots growing from the buried stem). Space indeterminate varieties 24–36" apart in rows 4–6' apart.
Trellising & Pruning (Indeterminate)
Requires sturdy trellising (e.g., basket-weave with 5–6' stakes). Indeterminates heavily benefit from removing all "suckers" below the first strong branch. Lower suckers often miss supports, set fruit too close to the soil, and rob energy from the main plant.
Culture & Disease Prevention
Prefers medium-rich soil (pH 6.0–6.8). Do not over-fertilize with nitrogen, which causes rampant leaf growth, delayed ripening, and rot. Avoid handling plants when wet. *Note: Strictly avoid using tobacco products near tomato plants to prevent Tobacco Mosaic Virus transmission.
Harvest & Storage
Fruits ripen gradually from the blossom end to the shoulders. Any fruit "breaking color" (showing first signs of red) will finish ripening post-harvest indoors. Store near-ripe fruit for 4–7 days at room temperature in darkness. Do not refrigerate too cold or pick too green, as this sacrifices flavor and texture.
