Venus Flytrap Instructions
Culture, Climate & Dormancy
USDA Zones 8–10. Flytraps can be grown outdoors year-round in zones 8-10. For colder zones (3-7), grow them in containers outdoors during summer. Crucial Dormancy: Flytraps are not tropical plants; they require a 3 to 4-month winter dormancy period to survive. In late fall, move containers to an unheated, brightly lit room or garage (between 35-50°F) so they can rest. Protect from deep freezes.
CRITICAL Soil & Water Rules
1. THE WATER: You MUST use ONLY Distilled water, Reverse Osmosis (RO) water, or Rainwater. The minerals in standard tap water or bottled spring water will burn their roots and kill the plant rapidly.
2. THE SOIL: Use ONLY a 50/50 mix of pure Sphagnum Peat Moss and Perlite (or silica sand). Do NOT use standard potting soil (like Miracle-Gro) or any mix containing fertilizer/compost. Fertilizer will kill carnivorous plants.
Sowing Method (Surface Sow)
Pre-moisten your peat moss/perlite mix with distilled water until damp. Sprinkle the tiny black seeds evenly over the surface. Do not bury them! They require light to germinate. Cover the pot with a clear plastic dome or ziplock bag to create 100% humidity. Place in a bright, warm location (75–85°F) out of harsh direct sunlight to avoid cooking the seeds. Keep the soil constantly damp.
Care & Patience Expectations
Germination takes 2 to 5 weeks. Once tiny green leaves appear, gradually open the dome to adapt them to normal humidity. Patience is required: Flytraps are incredibly slow-growing. The first traps will be microscopic (the size of a pinhead). It generally takes 2 to 4 years for a seed-grown flytrap to reach mature, flowering size.
Watering & Feeding
Watering: They are bog plants. Keep the pot sitting in a shallow tray filled with 1 inch of distilled water during the active growing season. Do not let them dry out.
Feeding: Never feed them human food, meat, or fertilizer. Once traps are large enough, you can feed them a live insect once a month if they are grown indoors; outdoor plants will catch all they need naturally.
