Grows beautifully across the US in USDA Zones 3–11. Plant in full sun. Snapdragons prefer rich, well-draining soil with a pH of 6.0-7.0. They perform best in the cooler temperatures of spring and early summer, or as a fall crop in warmer zones.
Sowing Method
Transplant (Recommended): Sow seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before your last frost. Press seeds gently into the soil surface; do not cover, as they require light to germinate. Bottom-water to avoid washing the tiny seeds away.
Temperatures & Germination
Maintain soil temperatures of 70-75°F (21-24°C) for optimal germination, which usually takes 7-14 days. Once emerged, grow seedlings in cooler conditions (around 60°F or 15°C) to encourage strong, stocky growth and prevent legginess.
Plant Spacing & Care
Space transplants 9-12" apart. When plants reach 4-5" tall, pinch out the center stem to encourage branching and a more abundant harvest of usable flower spikes.
Harvesting & Vase Life
Harvest for cut flowers when the bottom 2 to 3 blossoms on the spike have opened. Strip the lower leaves to prevent rot in the vase water. They offer an exceptionally long vase life of 7-10 days and add stunning architecture to arrangements.
