Planting Seasons
Spring/Fall: Start indoors 4-6 weeks before setting out. Fall crops should be seeded early in areas with heavy freezes.
Winter: In mild regions (temps rarely dropping below 32°F/0°C), set out transplants from September to February. USDA Zones 3-9.
Sowing Method
Direct Seed: Plant early spring to approx. 3 months before fall frost. Sow 3-4 seeds every 12-18", 1/2" deep. Thin to 1 plant.
Transplant: Sow 2 seeds/cell. Keep soil >75°F (24°C) until germ, then reduce air to 60°F (16°C).
Temperatures
Optimum Germination: 75–86°F (24–30°C). Rates decline rapidly above this range.
Growing: Prefers cooler weather 55–75°F (13–24°C), but will produce good crops under warmer summer conditions.
Plant Spacing
Space plants 12–18" apart in rows 18–36" apart for mature bunching production.
Culture
Prefers fertile, well-drained soil high in organic matter (pH 6.0–7.5). Consistent moisture ensures the highest-quality, most tender leaves.
Pests & Diseases
Apply row covers at planting. Control cabbage worms with Bt. Use long crop rotations with non-brassicas. Seed lots are tested for black rot & black leg. (Note: Negative tests do not guarantee a lot is 100% disease-free.)
Harvest
Begin ~2 months after planting by clipping individual leaves. Eating quality will noticeably improve and sweeten into the late fall after a light frost!
