Sowing Method
Direct Seed: Sow 3 seeds/ft. in rows 6' apart.
Culture: Plastic mulch and fabric row covers can aid plant establishment and exclude insect pests during the seedling stage. Row covers must be removed when plants begin to flower to allow for pollination.
Temperatures
Optimum Germination: Peaks sharply around 86°F (30°C). Requires warm, fertile, well-drained soil (pH 5.8–6.8).
Plant Spacing
Space plants 18–24" apart in rows 6' apart. Wider spacing may allow for easier harvesting.
Pollination Troubleshooting
It is common for the very first fruits to be malformed, wither, or blacken. This simply indicates poor early pollination and is usually remedied naturally as more male flowers appear.
Pests & Diseases
Protect young plants from cucumber beetles, squash bugs, and vine borers with floating row covers. Avoid powdery mildew and downy mildew by ensuring adequate soil drainage, good air flow, and crop rotation.
Dual Harvest Guide
Harvesting Squash: For this specific Cousa type (Magda), pick fruits when they are small, 3–4" long, for the best texture and flavor. Harvest regularly (2–3 times a week) by gently twisting or cutting fruits off the vine. Store at 40-50°F for up to 2 weeks.
Harvesting Blossoms: Edible squash blossoms are a delicacy! Harvest male blossoms (thin stems) or female blossoms (thick stems with tiny fruit at the base) mid-to-late morning when fully open. Tip: If you want a full squash harvest too, pick mostly male flowers, leaving a few behind to pollinate the females.
